Define the configuration before the numbers
Record the make, model, serial details and fitted attachments. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified operator to identify the approved transport configuration. Do not move booms, fold structures or disconnect attachments simply to obtain a smaller measurement.
Photograph the current configuration from safe ground-level positions and note any differences from the specification sheet. If preparation has not been completed, distinguish current dimensions from proposed transport dimensions and identify who will verify the final state.
Record the complete transport envelope
Provide overall length, width and height in clearly stated units, including protruding parts that will remain fitted. Explain the measurement endpoints on a simple sketch or annotated photo. A figure without its configuration or units is difficult to use reliably.
- Overall length, including fitted components that project forward or behind.
- Widest point of the agreed travelling configuration.
- Highest point measured from the stated supporting surface.
- Detached items listed separately with their own dimensions.
- Measurement date, source and any uncertainty or inaccessible area.
Measure only where access is safe
Do not climb machinery, work beneath raised components or enter operating areas to measure. Ask for qualified assistance or another appropriate verification method. An incomplete measurement should be declared, not guessed.
Explain what the weight includes
Distinguish manufacturer-listed operating weight from a verified transport weight. Attachments, counterweights, fluids and added equipment can change the figure. Record the source and configuration for each weight, and ask the provider whether further verification is required.
If an attachment travels separately, state whether its weight is included in the machine figure so it is neither omitted nor counted twice. Do not estimate from appearance or change fluid levels without manufacturer and carrier instructions.
Send the measurement record with your machinery transport assessment enquiry, so the provider can check suitability and request any missing information.
Leave loaded-combination decisions to the assessment
Machine height is not the final road travel height. The carrier must account for the chosen transport equipment and assess the complete load, route and applicable requirements. Do not compare an isolated measurement with an online threshold and conclude that no approval is needed.
In a hypothetical brief, a machine’s brochure weight excludes an added attachment. The useful correction is a documented configuration and weight source, not an unsupported total. Reconfirm the quote and plan if measurements change after inspection or preparation.
