Understand what each option asks of you
For a door-to-door arrangement, confirm the proposed addresses and ask whether the carrier can safely reach them. Where access is unsuitable, an alternative meeting point may need agreement. Do not choose a roadside loading spot yourself without the provider assessing it.
For depot-to-depot transport, you arrange to deliver the car to an agreed depot and collect it from another. Confirm that those depots are actually available for your route, their addresses and the process for booking a handover. A depot name is not enough to plan the local trip.
Compare the whole handover effort
A quoted transport price does not capture your travel time, time away from work or the cost of reaching home after leaving the car. Conversely, waiting at a residential address may be inconvenient if you cannot remain available during the estimated collection window.
- Who will take the car to the handover and get home afterwards?
- Can the recipient attend during the depot’s confirmed opening hours?
- What appointment, identification and release requirements apply?
- What storage or missed-handover terms should you understand?
- Is the vehicle suitable for any local driving needed, with registration and insurance checked separately?
Resolve access before choosing convenience
Tell the provider about dead-end streets, low branches, tight corners, traffic restrictions and limited turning space. Photos of the approach may be useful if taken safely. Depot access also needs checking if you are sending a representative or bringing another vehicle to collect the driver.
Ask whether different arrangements can be used at each end rather than assuming the two choices are all-or-nothing. A mixed handover is a question to investigate, not an option to book without confirmation.
When comparing interstate car transport handover options, ask for the exact scope and estimated timing of each available arrangement in writing.
Choose against your actual calendar
In a hypothetical house move, a depot handover might suit someone staying nearby with another driver available. A residential handover might suit someone without local transport, provided access and attendance can be agreed. Neither example establishes which option is cheaper or faster.
Before accepting, record the location, contact person, hours, notice process and contingency if the window changes. Confirm insurance scope independently; the handover label does not tell you when cover starts or ends.
